Curriculum Development Workshop on Livestock Management at Mayurbhanj, Green-Ag project, Odisha

The curriculum development workshop on Livestock Management under the Green-Ag Project, Odisha, was organized from 18.07.2023 to 19.07.2023 at the RKVY Resource Center in the O/o-P.D. Watershed, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. The workshop intended to develop a livestock product centric curriculum development including livestock rearing to value addition and market access. The Chief District Veterinary Officer of Mayurbhanj, Block Veterinary Officer (BVO) of six Green-Ag blocks, Project Director Watersheds, Mayurbhanj, Fodder Development Officer, Progressive Farmer, and representatives from the National Project Management Unit (NPMU)/FAO, Green Landscape Management Unit (GLIU), and Community Resource Persons (CRPs) attended the workshop.
At the beginning of the workshop, Shri Siba Charan Jethi, Project Director Watersheds Cum District Project Nodal Officer (DPNO), Mayurbhanj, Green-Ag Project, Odisha, welcomed the participants and briefed them about the purpose of the Curriculum Development workshop. Dr. Shashanka Panigrahi, Animal Husbandry Expert, GLIU, made a detailed presentation covering the important components of livestock management, such as the role of livestock in the Green-Ag project, health and nutrition management of livestock, and breeding management of livestock. The Animal Husbandry Expert, GLIU, facilitated the workshop with the help of the GLIU team.
Shri Hitesh Ram Kishore Awasthi, Animal Husbandry Specialist, NPMU/FAO, discussed the core components of livestock management during the discussion, including housing types, breeding management, general management, preventive health management and major diseases, nutrition management and feeding practices, livelihood and value addition, and the role of gender inclusion in the process.
During the small group exercises, participants collaborated on different small group exercises on the curriculum development template. It was suggested to give more focus on alternate nutrition management for grazing animals inside the reserves in curriculum development.
The workshop concluded by considering inputs from GLIU experts regarding the present livestock scenario and the deficiencies in this sector in the Green-Ag villages and six curriculum drafts were prepared. The findings/inputs were recorded on a template for curricula development. The next day each component of the template was discussed with the GLIU team and common points for intervention were identified to be included in the curricula as received from the NPMU expert.
